Largest Omelette

On 8 October 2010, Yum-Bir, the Turkish Egg Producers Association, and Pruva Neta, a travel agency, invited me in representation of Guinness World Records to Cepa shopping mall in Ankara, Turkey, to verify their attempt to create the world’s largest omelette in celebration of World Egg Day 2010.

To achieve the record feat, Yum-Bir’s Derya Pala and Pruva Neta’s Onur Tümer and Oykun Gürkan teamed up with Rixos Grand Ankara’s Executive Chef Süleyman Aşçıoğlu and his incredibly hard-working and enthusiastic team of 10 chefs and 50 cooks.

Although the turnout could have been compromised by bad weather, the event drew an enthusiastic crowd and received national and international press coverage. In his opening speech, Turkish Agriculture Minister Mehmet Mehdi Eker spoke of the future prospects for the Turkish egg industry and wished the Guinness World Records challengers success in their record breaking attempt.

The record to beat was 3.625 tonnes (7,991 lb 12 oz) set in South Africa in 2009. To ensure that the attempt would be a successful one, from the very beginning the record challengers were aiming at exceeding the 4 tonnes mark and careful planning, testing and preparations took place in the weeks leading up to the attempt date to ensure that everything went according to plan. Businesses from the local area also helped, with many volunteering services and products free of charge.

Compliance with Guinness World Records’ guidelines was of the essence for the successful outcome of the attempt: the finished omelette had to be edible, include eggs and oil or butter and be a scaled-up version of a normal omelette.

Before the dish was cooked, the massive metal pan and its supporting structure, supplied by Limit Isi, were weighed at a staggering 3.424 tonnes (7548 lb 10 oz) with the help of six transpallets, each with a load capacity of 2000 kg, supplied and calibrated by Baykon’s Onur Özcan.

After the official tare weigh-in, the 110,000 pasteurised organic liquid eggs supplied by Liquid Egg Company Anako in a large refrigerated truck just before the start of the event, were poured into the pan along with the 300 litres oil and salt. The chefs and cooks kept a careful eye on the omelette for over two hours, indefatigably stirring it to mix the ingredients and to ensure it was evenly cooked.

The ultimate weight was a staggering 4.401 tonnes (9,702 lb 8 oz), thereby qualifying the attempt as a new Guinness World Records achievement. At the announcement a deafening cheer erupted and the celebrations began with the omelette tasting.
